MID-PENN ACES PLAY DOUBLE HEADER AT DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY IN PITTSBURGH

The Aces headed out to Pittsburgh on Sunday, October 12th, for a doubleheader with the Allegheny Pirates. The Aces ran into some very strong pitching and ended up being swept by the Pirates, losing the 1st game by a 9-3 score and then getting shutout 2-0 in the 2nd-half of the twinbill.

In the 1st game, the Aces jumped out t a 2-0 lead, with Kyle Witman driving in the first run of the game with a single in the 2nd inning, and Irv Sleighter driving in the second run with a fielder's choice in the third. The Pirates tied it with single runs in the 3rd and 5th innings. The Aces went ahead in their half of the sixth on a leadoff triple to center by Ryan Murray, follow up by an RBI-single to right by Kyle Davis. However, the Pirates exploded for seven runs in their half of the sixth inning, with six of these runs scoring after the Aces had registered 2 outs in the inning. The Aces pitchers, Irv Sleighter, Bryan Snyder, and Shayne Wilkinson had limited the Pirates to 3 hits and 2 unearned runs over the first 5 innings. Riley Cameron pitched the final inning by striking out the side.

The second game turned out to be a pitchers' duel, with the Pirates scoring a pair in the 2nd inning off of Paul Knutson on two walks and a single. These runs proved to be enough as the Pirates pitchers limited the Aces to 3 hits over seven innings. Nate Kranz, Nathan Nehf, and Irv Sleighter were the only baserunners of the game, each getting on via a single. Irv was the only hitter to reach base twice with a single in the 1st and a walk in the 4th.

The Aces pitching in the 2nd game allowed only the one-hit in 2nd inning. Eric Chamberlin, Dustin McClain, Sam Watts, and Rhys Wolford combined for 5 innings of no-run, no-hit baseball, allowing only 3 runners to reach base.

It wasn't enough however, as the Aces fell to the Pirates 2-0.

The Aces organization is not for profit. The Mid-Penn Aces are not associated with AAU baseball.
