ROBERT JONES TIDEWATER FALL CLASSIC OCTOBER 3-4 A SUCCESS FOR THE ACES

The Aces made a long trek to Southern Virginia over the weekend of October 3-4, to participate in the Robert Jones Tidewater Fall Classic. The team had another successful weekend, ending up with a 2-1 record.

The Mid-Penn Aces faced a familiar foe, Pa Select, in the first game and came away with a 5-1 victory. Dustin McClain delivered with a 2-run double in the 2nd inning, and Kyle Davis also had singles in the 4th and 6th innings, driving in a pair of runs as well. Rhys Wolford picked up the victory, pitching 2 perfect innings of no-hit, no-run baseball, while striking out two.

Game two also pitted the Aces against another familiar foe, the Mid-Maryland Red Sox. These teams had faced one another twice before, splitting the decisions. The Ace trailed early in the game and were behind by two going into the 6th inning. With two runners on and 1-out, Irv Sleighter hit a 1-0 fastball over the left-field fence for a 3-run homer, putting the Aces ahead to stay. Lance Brown added a run-scoring triple an inning later and Ryan Murray's 2-run single in the ninth ended the scoring and closed the books on a 9-3 victory. Paul Knutson pitched 3-innings of shutout baseball for the win, allowing only one hit, with a strikeout and two walks mixed in.

On Sunday afternoon, the team met the Richmond Indians, a team they had beaten in the Gardziel Classic two weeks earlier. The Aces jumped out to a 5-1 lead through 4 innings but couldn't muster any runs after that, eventually losing by a 9-5 score. Lance Brown was the hitting star in the game, going 3 for 4, while Nathan Nehf contributed 2 RBI's on a 1 for 2 day at the plate. On the pitching end, Irv Sleighter threw 3 strong innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit, while striking out 8 batters.

For the weekend, Ryan Murray and Lance Brown led the way at the plate. Ryan batted .556, with 5 hits in 9 at-bats, and contributed 4 RBI's. Lance batted .444 with 4 hits in 9 at-bats, walked twice and scored 4 runs over the 3 game tournament.

On the mound, four Aces pitchers did not allow an earned run over the tournament. Irv Sleighter and Sam Watts each pitched four innings without allowing an earned run and Bryan Snyder and Paul Knutson each threw 3 innings without an earned run being scored as well. The catching corps of Andy Carter, Steve Brindle and Matt Umberger combined for 35 putouts over the 3 game tournament.
