ACES DO WELL IN TOMS RIVER NJ SHOWCASE

The Aces participated in the Labor Day Shore Shootout at Tom's River and ended up with a 2-2 record, winning the opening and closing games, while dropping a pair of games on "Black Saturday."

Eric Chamberlin led the team with 5 hits over the course of the tournament, hitting safely in all four games. Nate Kranz had an On-Base percentage of 750 for the weekend, reaching base six out of eight times, ending up with 2 singles, 1 double, 2 walks and a hit-by-pitch. Nate also contributed a team-leading 4 RBIs.

The team also played a little long ball with 3 home runs being hit, one each by Ryan Murray, Dustin McClain, and Matt Umberger.

Fielding played a big part in the team's tournament record. In our two wins, the team played well in the field. Against the New Jersey Dukes, the team played errorless baseball. Our catching corps had a strong game, with Matt Umberger nailing 2 base runners attempting to steal and Andy Carter and Steve Brindle each picking off base runners as well. In the game with the Brooklyn Bonnie Monarchs, the team had strong fielding as well, committing only 2 errors offset by 2 double plays turned to end the 1st and 7th innings.

The pitching highlights included 4 pitchers who did not allow and earned run during their stints on the mound. This effort was led by Sam Watts who threw 3 innings and did not give up an earned run, while allowing only 2 base hits. Rhys Wolford also threw 3 innings of shutout baseball, giving up 2 walks and 2 base hits in his 3 game appearances. Alan Donato pitched 2 innings of scoreless baseball and Riley Cameron did not allow a run in his inning of work. In additoon, Irv Sleighter limited the opponents to a .111 cumulative batting average over his 3 innings of work, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk, while striking out three.
